The Panadura Debate
Crowds sat on mats as far as the beach to listen, and Charlie Dias fed those who had travelled from afar.
The debate marked the peak of the first phase of the Buddhist revival, and its success brought Colonel Henry Steel Olcott to Ceylon.
Notable people
Many early fortunes came from the arrack trade. Their owners later moved into other businesses and spent heavily on temples, schools and public welfare.
